Philly born Gangstarr Foundation member Bahamadia has to be one of the most talented female emcees to ever touch mic, and the well respected lyricist’s critically acclaimed debut album ‘Kollage’, released in 1996, showcases her microphone skillz to great effect. Her smooth monotone flow and her association with Gangstarr always meant that she put me in mind of a female version of the late great Guru. Guru actually produces a couple of beats to the album, with the majority of the other beats being provided by his partner in crime DJ Premier and Da Beatminerz. The beat for this particular track, which happens to be my favourite cut from this album, was crafted by Ski and DJ Redhanded. As well as this album Bahamadia’s reputation has also been enhanced by some impressive guest appearances on tracks by more high profile artists such as The Roots, Talib Kweli, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Planet Asia, and through her association with Philly’s Army of the Pharaohs Collective.
