J-Live – The Lyricist

I’ve been wanting to post a track from J-Live for a while now but I haven’t been able to decide which of his tracks to post. In my opinion, the problem is that J-Live has just been so consistent with his rhymes throughout his career. From his early releases such as the classic ‘Braggin’ Writes’ (1995), right through to tracks like ‘How I Feel Pt.3’ and ‘Pronounced Spitta’ from his latest album S.P.T.A. (2011), the Brooklyn emcee has always brought that great mixture of a happy, likeable, personality, and a superb ability to ride a beat with some intellegent, relatable, and engaging lyrics. I have a lot of respect for J-Live. This is a guy who has never gained the kind of attention and acclaim that he is deserving of, despite being well respected by many legends of the hip hop industry, yet he keeps on keeping on. His work rate is commendable, and his output is always of a decent quality whether as a DJ, emcee, or producer. Justice Allah, as he is also sometimes known, has even been able to hold down a job as a middle school teacher in the Brownsville and Bushwick sections of Brooklyn, working on his music only after the sound of the school bell at the end of the day. This track is definitely one of my favourites from J-Live. I can’t get enough of that bubbly jazzy beat and the flute sections remind me of Ron Burgundy’s jazz flute master class in the film Anchorman. This cut is the closing track of J-Live’s second full-length album ‘All of the Above’, released in 2002. This album might’nt be J-Live’s best release, but just as with all of the rapper’s other full-length album and EP releases, it is a nice easy listen that is certainly worth checking out in its entirety.
